Two-dimensional quantitative mapping of laminar composite and coating tenacity comprises irradiating one side of the composite with a short laser pulse, and from the recorded resultant profile of temperature over time on the opposite side, the thermal contact resistance is determined. The mathematical solution of a two layer model for temperature variation is employed. Preferred features: The two layers of the composite are joined by a further bonding layer. The composite is alternatively a single layer with a coating on one side. Measurements are taken from a planar composite, by irradiating many points in a pattern of scanning. Thickness and/or conductivity of the bonding layer is considered in the evaluation.
