The invention relates to an ignition control for an internal combustion engine comprising at least one cylinder, a chargeable ignition coil (6, 9) which in the presence of a primary ignition current can be switched on via a switching stage (25, 26) so as to ignite a corresponding cylinder, a first family of characteristics in which dwell angles for a first primary ignition current of the ignition coil (6, 9) are stored, a second family of characteristics in which dwell angles for a second primary ignition current of the ignition coil (6, 9) are stored, a detection device (20) for detecting the misfires occurring in the cylinders, and calculation device (3) which calculates a control dwell angle for controlling the switching stage (25, 26) in accordance with the number of misfires detected and the dwell angles stored in the two families of characteristics.
