PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method and an apparatus in which the distribution function of the magnitude of a single body is obtained without performing an operation to separate the single body, by a method wherein the circumferential length measuring treatment of an extracted image and the image reduction/expansion treatment of a prescribed change amount portion regarding the extracted image are executed repeatedly, and the distribution state of the magnitude of the single body is found on the basis of the change amount of a circumferential length per prescribed change amount. SOLUTION: A sample image is inputted by an imaging device 1, it is stored in a shade image memory 9, and it is binarized and processed so as to be stored in a binarized-image memory 8, At this time, the shading of an image signal level is corrected, a very small noise or the like is removed and the sample image is binarized. Then, the circumferential length of the binarized image is measured, and a measured result is stored in a memory 10 for computing. After the circumferential length is measured, the image which is stored in the memory 9 is degenerated, and image data in the memory 9 is rewritten. Then, a state that the binarized image becomes a background is judged. The measurement of the circumferential length, the storage of the measured result into the memory, the degeneration of the image and the rewriting of the memory 9 are repeated alternately. After that, the differential of the circumferential length is found by a difference method, and the function of a differential area rate is found.
