A contraction joint for connecting aligned sections of pipe. The joint comprises inner and outer sleeves having opposite ends adapted to be secured to the pipe sections, a first guide member at a lower end of the inner sleeve, and a second guide member at an upper end of the outer sleeve. The first and second guide members slidably and telescopically support the inner and outer sleeves for coaxial movement between an expanded position and a contracted position. The inner and outer sleeves are radially spaced apart to provide an annular chamber between the sleeves and the first and second guide members. A sealing member is contained within the annular chamber for rolling contact with opposing surfaces of the inner and outer sleeves between the first and second guide members as the sleeves move between the expanded position and the contracted position. Also, a seal locking member is provided associated with the sealing member. The seal locking member is adapted to permit relative movement of the sealing member with respect to the sleeves during movement between the expanded position and the contracted position and to prevent movement of the sealing member when exposed to pressure differentials in the annular chamber.
