A filtration device (110) comprising a filter tank (111) fed with polluted water, an agitation tank (122), and a screw conveyor (23) disposed in the agitation tank (122). A filter material (51) is received in the agitation tank (122) and in a vessel (112). The agitation tank (122) has a side opening (172), a lower opening (178), and an upper end opening (122b). When the screw conveyor (23) is rotated, the filter material (51) and water (polluted water) (52) rise from the lower opening (178) to the upper end opening (122b) where they are agitated, with the filter material (51) being cleaned as it circulates in the agitation tank (122) and the vessel (112). On completion of the cleaning, a backward-flow water feed pump (18') is operated to reverse the flow and the pollutants separated from the filter material (51) and flowing out are discharged into the outside of the vessel (112) by a discharge pump (21'). A side door (160) closes the side opening (172) by a drive means (182) only during cleaning (agitation). The filtration area is increased.
