The charge coupled device (CCD) camera (22) is integrated into the head of the probe (4). The camera is connected to an electronic signal transmitting unit (23), also integrated into the probe, which is connected via a low capacitance cable extending through the probe to an image reproduction and/or storage unit (9). The probe is fitted with a lens (25) and infrared filter (26) and/or a focus adjusting system, preferably an automatic focusing system. The vehicle inspection system includes an endoscopic probe (4) fitted with an optical head (5) and probe lighting unit (6) for detection by means of a camera system (8) detached parts of the vehicles exhaust system. The lighting unit includes a luminous source (15) as well as several optical fiber light guides (16) concentricity arranged around the housing (17) of the probe. The camera unit is fitted inside the concentricity arranged fiber optic guides. The probe has an output (18) via which the detached part is lit.
