A FWD vehicle where either the front or the rear wheels are driven by an IC engine, and the others by an electric motor, this being run when the car is started, has a circuit (15) to measure the drive torque to the wheels from the engine and a control circuit (10) for the electric motor to inhibit it if the starting torque exceeds a certain value. This threshold value is reduced if the initial acceleration at the wheels lies above a certain value.
