摘要 A social networking system classifies content items according to their qualities for ranking and selection of content items to present to users within, for example, a newsfeed. Low-quality content items that are unlikely to be interesting or relevant to a user may be distinguished though they may appear to be popular among users in the social networking system. The social networking system identifies within the content items one or more features that are indicators of the quality of the content items. The social networking system can use one or more classifiers to evaluate the content items based on the features, and it can compute a quality metric indicating the quality of a content item based on the result obtained from the classifiers. The quality metric can be used in the ranking and selection of a set of content items to provide to the user.

A computer-implemented method, comprising: receiving a request for a plurality of content items to be presented to a user of a social networking system, the user connected to a plurality of other users in the social networking system; for each of a set of candidate content items for the user: identifying one or more features of the candidate content item, the one or more features related to a quality of the candidate content item,determining one or more classifiers based on the one or more features identified, the one or more classifiers describing the quality of the candidate content item, andcomputing a quality metric for the candidate content item based on the one or more classifiers, the quality metric indicating the quality of the content item relative to other candidate content items of the set; and providing the computed quality metric for each of the candidate content items of the set to a content item ranking process to select the plurality of content items to present to the user.
