Chlorinated hydrocarbons are obtained by feeding an aliphatic C1- 4 hydrocarbon or partially chlorinated hydrocarbon, an oxygen-containing gas and HCl and/or Cl2 into a fluidized bed of metal halide particles, the oxygen-containing gas being introduced through conduits to the fluidized bed at a distance removed from the level of introduction of the other reactants such that the oxygen in the conduits traverses the zone in which the other reactants are in contact with the metal halide particles and is thereby preheated. Examples prepare CH2ClCH2Cl from C2H4; C2Cl4 and C2HCl3 from CH2ClCH2Cl; vinyl chloride fro C2H6; CCl4 and CHCl3 from CH4; and C3 products from C3H6.
