A metal compound is decomposed to metal by the heat contained in powder particles suspended in a gas. As shown, the gas-suspended powder is heated in a heat exchanger 12, passed to a distributor 17 and fed by ducts 18 into a decomposer 11. Metal compound, generally a carbonyl, is introduced at 19 and the resultant coated powder is withdrawn at 14 and fed to a classifier 16. The powder suspended in the gas may be Ni, Fe, Cr, Cu, Al, Mg, Si, alumina, magnesia silica, thoria, graphite, refractory carbides, nitrides, silicides and borides. The nature of the metal compound fed to the decomposer may be changed during the process to provide more than one coating on the powder. |
