A sintered porous body is formed from a shaped powder mixture of Ni powder, a Raney Ni alloy and at least 10% by weight of an oxide of Ni, which is heated in a hydrogen atmosphere e.g. at 200 DEG -300 DEG C. to reduce the oxide to Ni, the temperature being such that diffusion of the Raney Ni alloy phases into one another does not occur. The Raney Ni alloy is an alloy of Ni with Al, Si, Mg or Zn. The Raney Ni alloy powder has a grain size of 30 microns, the Ni powder a size of 5 microns and the oxide of Ni a size of 4 microns. The sintered body may be activated with caustic potash solution to form a gas diffusion electrode. |
