Acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile are produced by passing propylene or isobutylene, ammonia and an oxygen-containing gas over a catalyst, a molar ratio of 1.5 to 4 mols of oxygen per mol of propylene or isobutylene and of 0.5 to 1.75 mols of ammonia per mol of propylene or isobutylene being employed, the catalyst comprising a mixture of manganese molybdate, telurium oxide and a manganese phosphate in a molar ratio of 100 MnMoO4, 10-100 TeO2 and 5-50 of a manganese phosphate. The reaction is suitably effected at 350-500 DEG C., preferably in the presence of 0-7 mols of steam per mol of propylene or isobutylene, employing a contact time of 2 to 70 seconds, and an inert diluent gas may be present. The catalyst, which may be carried on a conventional support, may be prepared by dry-bleeding the ingredients or by mixing aqueous solutions of the individual components followed by drying and baking. |
