An ozone producing apparatus comprises an ozone generator 12 supplied with an oxygen containing gas and connected to a heat exchanger 20 for cooling the gas as it flows therethrough and means for recirculating gas through said generator 12 and heat exchanger 20, the ozone generator 12 comprising a plurality of parallel plate electrodes 17 and intervening parallel films 15 of polymeric material, e.g. polyester, polyimide, P.T.F.E., biaxially oriented polypropylene, or polycarbonate. The films 15 are not self-supporting and are therefore held under tension between upper and lower insulating spacers 29, 31 which are secured by adhesive to the electrodes 17. The insulating spacers 29, 31 are secured together by compression screws 35 threaded through bars 37 extending across side walls 21 of the generator housing 22. The electrodes 17 are stainless steel or aluminium and are thinner than conventional electrodes as they do not have to withstand the pressure of cooling water. Oxygen containing gas is introduced at inlet 55 and ozone containing gas is exhausted at the same flow rate from outlet 57. The inlet gas is conveyed through heat exchanger 20, ozone generator 12, blower 19 and back to the heat exchanger. The flow rate through the generator 12 is about fifty times that through outlet 69 so that the gas is constantly being recirculated. In an alternative arrangement the ozone generator comprises a number of units consisting of an electrode plate having upper and lower insulating spacers to which are secured tensioned polymeric films interposed with electrodes to which upper and lower insulating spacers are secured. In Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) the ozone generator is formed from a ribbon of polymeric film which carries spaced electrodes formed alternately on opposite sides thereof by evaporating or electroplating. The ribbon is folded zig-zag fashion and insulating spacers are placed in the upper and lower loops so formed and moved apart to tension the films so that the electrodes are parallel. Thereafter the opposite ends may be potted with thermosetting or thermoplastic resin.
