1301563 Hydraulic controls S R CUDNOHUFSKY 5 Feb 1970 [25 April 1969] 5474/70 Headings B3B and B3T The hydraulic control of the position of a tool 20 relative to a workpiece 60 is governed by a cross slide 14 which is moved by a cylinder 16 which receives pressure fluid via a feed line 36. The outlet from the full-bore side of the cylinder 16 is controlled by a valve 52 and a feed control means 56 so that the position of the cross slide 14 depends upon a balance across the piston in the cylinder 16. The feed line 36 is also connected to a main control valve 18 which is controlled by a tracer 22 acting on a template 24 to variably restrict the flow through the valve and thereby vary the back pressure in the feed line 36 and control the actuation of the cylinder 16. The said cylinder acts to feed the tool 20 into the work in response to a drop in pressure in the feed line 36, and away from the work in response to an increase in pressure. A by-pass passageway 88 around the control valve 18 is provided and includes an adjustable restrictor 90 for controlling the amount of fluid diverted from the valve 18. By adjusting the restrictor 90 to increase the restriction the tool is moved away from the work, and by reducing the restriction the tool is moved towards the workpiece. By this means the position of a tool can be adjusted relative to the template tracer to allow for tool wear and resetting. A plurality of tools may be used, i.e. an indexable lathe tool post, and a by-pass passageway and adjustable restrictor is provided for each tool. The by-pass passageway is provided in a valve post bolted to the bottom of the valve 18 and which includes a micrometer adjustment to a needle valve restrictor. The cross slide 14, e.g. of a cathode, is mounted on a main slide 10 actuated by a cylinder 12 which receives a low pressure supply from feed line 30. The full bore side of the cylinder 12 is connected to cylinder 16 and the feed control means 56 to relate the movement of the main slide 10 to the movement of the cross slide 14 as the template 24 is traversed by the tracer 22. |
