An arrangement for switching apparatus from one D.C. potential to another includes a current collector which moves from a first potential rail to a second potential rail by way of intermediate rails. The potentials are controlled so that transfer of the collector occurs only between rails at substantially equal potentials. As shown in Fig. 2, the rails 11 and 13 are at different potentials and are connected to respective intermediate rails 16, 18 by way of measuring units 19, 20 which may be D.C. transformers. When the current collector has moved from rail 11 on to rail 16, a current will appear in the unit 19 and this causes the potential of rails 13 and 18 to be adjusted to be equal to that of rails 11 and 16. The potential difference is restored when the collector has moved on to the rail 18. If a previous collector is still in contact with the rail 13, the potential of this rail is regulated through a rectifier 14 so that the current through the unit 20 is maintained at zero until the previous collector has left the rail 13. If the preceding collector is known to have left the rail 13, the measuring unit 20 can be omitted. The arrangement is suitable for use in an electrophoretic varnishing installation. |
