[Also in Division B1] 1-Chloro-1-fluoroethane is made by reacting vinyl chloride and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride in vapour phase in the presence of a solid catalyst comprising fluorosulphonic acid carried on active carbon. Typical reaction conditions are 20-100‹ C. and atmospheric pressure. 1: 1-Di-, fluoroethane is the main by-product of the reaction. Comparative examples describe the loading of a cylindrical reactor with pellets of active carbon which have been impregnated with fluorosulphonic acid and the passage upwardly therethrough of the reactant gases. |
