Aliphatic aldehydes having 4 or 5 C atoms per molecule and a straight or methyl branched chain which may contain a non-terminal olefinic linkage are oxidized in a liquid medium or mixture by passing through molecular oxygen or a gas containing the same. The liquid medium consists of two separate liquid phases, one of which is aqueous. Examples describe the preparation of butyric acid, iso-butyric acid, iso-valeric acid, and crotonic acid. |
