Phenyl phosphonates (I):- (where R is 1-3C alkyl, X is Cl or Br and Y is Br or I) are prepd. by (a) reacting an O-alkyl phenylphosphonyl chloride C6H5PO(OR)Cl (II) with (III) a phenol (III) as a salt or in the presence of acid-binders; or (b) reacting a phenyl phosphonic acid deriv. (IV) with an alcohol ROH (V), in presence of a base. (I) are active ingredients in pesticide compsns, for example against flies, beetles, cockroaches and mites, partic. caterpillars.
