Ferromanganese contg. low concns. of C and Si, and esp. useful for manganese steels in which low C is reqd., is obtd. by a two-stage process in which the manganese oxide minerals and iron oxides are first reduced to the monoxide, and subsequently melted with silicomanganese to give reduction to the metal. The initial reduction is carried out in a furnace in which a mixture of mineral, limestone and C are progressed against a counter current of gas which is very hot and very reducing at the end of the furnace where the mineral leaves. The gas is only mildly reducing where the mineral charge enters the furnace.
|
