Solid electrolyte - electrode assembly for fuel cells - contg a gas-impermeable layer and a porous layer coated with nickel

The two solid electrolyte layers are formed pref. from zirconia opt. stabilised with Yb203, by sintering or spraying the molten material. Nickel is deposited on the visible surface and the pore walls of the porous layer by thermal decomposition of Ni(CO)4 (pref. mixed with N2). The assembly is gas impermeable, and yet the electrode surface is highly developed so that the ionic conductance is high and the removal of the products of electrochemical combustion is facilitated.
