HOLLOW EXTRUDED SHAPES IN PLASTIC MATERIAL FOR PACKINGS

1428778 Crates ISAP SpA 13 March 1973 [20 March 1972] 12118/73 Heading B8D [Also in Divisions B4-B5] A hollow extruded plastics section, e.g. of polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene or styrene co-polymer, for use in the construction of packing crates, is provided with longitudinally extending reinforcing partitions and has a molecular orientation which is in the longitudinal section, and is homogeneous throughout. The external edges of the section may be rounded. The external walls may be of 0À2 to 0À4 mm. thickness. The section may comprise an angle strip as in Fig. 4, the limbs of which may be of the same or different widths and at an angle between 10 and 160 degrees, and the side walls 2311 may be part planar. The section may alternatively be flat and transversely elongate, Fig. 1 (not shown), having reinforcing partitions of the same relative inclination as those 22 of the Fig. 4 embodiment, and with either similar side walls Fig. 6 (not shown), or with side walls which are entirely arcuate. A plurality of the Fig. 4 sections, or a plurality of such flat sections, but having side walls similar to those 2311 of the Fig. 4 embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), may be simultaneously extruded, with their adjacent side walls interconnected by webs (29) which are sheared, preferably prior to complete cooling, to separate the sections. A flat section may be closed at its longitudinal ends, Fig. 3 (not shown). The section may also be externally triangular, Fig. 5 (not shown), with the partitions defining passages in the section which are triangular or polygonal, and a plurality of such sections may also be simultaneously extruded with interconnecting webs. Flat sections may also comprise reinforcing partitions of the Fig. 8 orientation. One or more partitions, or external walls, may be thicker than the remainder, as in Fig. 7, where the partitions 221 or 2211, may be of greater thickness, or alternatively may be of the same thickness as the external walls. Alternatively, only the central partition may be thicker, or a partition near each side, or the side external walls may be thicker. The Fig. 11 packing crate comprises "L" sections 1911, as in the Fig. 4 embodiment, and flat sections 33 secured together by cross members comprising further flat strips 33 through which pass metal fasteners 31, and by corner stanchions comprising triangular sections 34, as in the Fig. 5 embodiment, through the internal passages of which bracing members 35 are inserted from each end and interengaged. The sections comprising the crate may also be provided with recesses, facilitating assembly by welding or glueing, or with holes for the passage of fasteners. In the crate of the Fig. 9 embodiment (not shown), flat sections (33) are assembled by metal fasteners to wooden cross members and triangular corner stanchions (32). The crate of the Fig. 10 embodiment (not shown) comprises flat sections (33) secured by metal fastenings (31) to triangular wooden corner stanchions and cross members comprising further flat sections (33).
