Oxygen is injected through the tuyeres and the relative amounts of bottom and side wall injection are adjusted during the process. At the beginning of the process oxygen may be blown mainly through the bottom tuyeres until the greater part of the silicon has been oxidized. The relative amount of oxygen admitted through the side wall is then increased during addition of lime to maintain the slag in a fluid and oxidized state. When the lime addition is completed bottom blowing is increased to complete oxidation of carbon. The side wall tuyeres may be disposed to produce jets directed obliquely upwards, towards the centre of the converter and/or tangentially to impart rotary movement to the melt.</p>
