The incandescent lamp uses a quartz tube which contains metal oxides and/or non-metal oxides. The oxides may be distributed uniformly through the entire cross-section of the tube, i.e. by adding the oxides to molten quartz used to make the tube. Alternatively, the oxides may be conc. in the outer zone of the tube by diffusion, none of these oxides being present at the bore surface of the tube. The oxides are pref. restricted to specific axial zones of the quartz tube, so that some radiation from the filament passes through plain quartz. In comparison with conventional infrared cooking lamps, the invention provides a simple method for reducing the amt. of visible light and converting the latter to infrared radiation, and also increases the yield of far infrareding the browning of food being cooked.
