A floating boom unit is flexible and comprises floats and a water-permeable ammoning formed by interconnected longitudinal and transverse elements. The longitudinal elements are capable of withstanding all longitudinal traction loads applied to the boom in use. The ammoning has transverse stiffeners capable of supporting the floats. They delimit shipping zones or water areas which may be used as swimming areas or areas free of pollution. The high resistance flexible boom forms an effective barriers which may be adapted to different requirements of the user. Interchangeable modular components, such as floats and skirts of different types, may be associated with a high resistance base structure. The unit may carry a containment skirt when acting as an oil boom.
