PURPOSE:To shorten scanning time by scanning photoelectric transducers constituted in respective blocks in common, selectively scanning respective blocks and scanning only the information corresponding to the photoelectric transducer in a selected block. CONSTITUTION:In case of scanning all the photoelectric transducers, a scanning circuit 3 scans all the blocks. In this case, a scanning circuit 2 scans (m) pieces of elements 1a in the 1st block at first, and then scans m elements 1a in the 2nd block so as to successively scan (m) pieces of elements 1a in each block up to the final n-th block. In case of a prescribed element 1a out of the photoelectric transducer array 1, scanning width set up by a document end detector or the like in the circuit 3 and the circuit 3 scans the preset block. Thereby, the circuit 2 successively scans by every (m) pieces of elements 1a in the block scanned by the circuit 3, so that only the information in the required scanning width can be scanned. Namely, the circuit 2 scans the elements 1a at every block successively in each block and the circuit 3 scans the block selectively.
