PURPOSE:To prevent an increase in load without decreasing a paper feed speed when a sheet is transported, by driving an driving motor of a cut sheet feeder intermittently. CONSTITUTION:Although a sheet transportation roller 1 and a paper feed roller 2 are driven at the same time, the sheet transportation roller 1 is rotated continuously and the paper feed roller is rotated intermittently so that a sheet is transported from C to D. While the front edge of a sheet 9 is between the position D of a front pinch roller 6 and the position E where recording starts, the drive motor for a cut sheet feeder stops and only the sheet transportation roller 1 is driven to transport the sheet 9. When the sheet 9 is positioned at the recording start position E, a recording head is used and only the sheet transportation roller 1 is turned a prescribed pitch for effecting the line feed of the sheet.
