1,2,4-Butanetriol can be prepared in the industrially desired simple and economic manner by reacting but-3-en-1-ol in a solvent at temperatures of up to 100 DEG C in the presence of acids or oxides of metals from Groups IV, V, VI or VII with hydrogen peroxide and hydrolysing the resulting 1,2-epoxybutan-4-ol at elevated temperature.
