PURPOSE:To achieve favorable continuous gradational image recording and two-valued recording with high sharpness, by providing a pigment-containing thermal transfer layer and a sublimable dye-containing thermal transfer layer on one side of a sheet-shaped heat-resistant base on a sheet-by-sheet basis. CONSTITUTION:A thermal transfer layer 2 with a pigment dispersed therein and a thermal transfer layer 3 with a sublimable dye dispersed therein are provided on one side 1a of a sheet-shaped heat-resistant base 1 on a sheet-by- sheet basis to produce a thermal transfer sheet 4. The base 1 may be, for example, a polyethylene terephthalate or polyimide film having a thickness of 2-10mum. The sheet 4 may be provided with a heat-resistant layer comprising a thermosetting resin or the like on the side 1b for contact with a thermal head, and with a release layer comprising a silicone resin or the like on the side 1a opposite to the pigment-containing thermal transfer layer 2. The thermal transfer layer 2 comprises, in addition to the pigment, a binder material comprising a hot-melt material, a surfactant and a softener. The sublimable dye in the thermal transfer layer 3 may be a heat-sublimable dye, e.g., a nitro dye, an azo dye, a quinophthalone dye or an anthraquinone dye. |
