The moulding sand is tipped or introduced by pneumatic means into a moulding device which consists of a pattern plate, at least one pattern situated thereon, a mould frame and, if required a filling frame and its mould chamber being closable. It is then compacted by means of pressure pulses from a pulse generator acting on the charge of moulding sand. The new method is intended to effect better compaction of the moulding sand. For this purpose, part of the moulding sand in the mould frame and, in particular, its area of increased packing density, is displaced towards the pulse generator before impulse compaction, in a direction opposite to the direction of impulse compaction.
