PURPOSE:To allow efficient layout operation by constituting the device in such a manner that the other of the illustrations and characters for one piece of merchandise can be automatically laid out upon completion of the layout operation of one. CONSTITUTION:The automatic layout device 52 is the device to apply instructions to a layout executing device 51 in place of an instruction inputting device 43 so that automatic layout can be executed. The merchandise information on one piece of the merchandise is constituted of the set of the illustrations and characters defined in the mutual correspondence relations. The characters (or illustrations) corresponding to the illustrations (or characters) of certain merchandise are automatically extracted by the automatic layout device 52 when an operator completes the layout operation for the illustrations (or characters) of the above-mentioned merchandise. The layout operation to a prescribed position is then automatically executed. The operator is necessitated to apply the layout information only to either one of the illustrations or characters of each of the merchandise. The efficient layout operation is thus possible.
