The drive management system includes the computer (1) monitoring vehicle operation and controlling power drawn from the vehicle batteries. The computer is able to initiate a reduced power mode of operation if any anomaly in the operation of the batteries of the drive is detected. The drive system is monitored by temperature detectors (5,6,7,8) fitted to each of the major elements in the drive and by voltage and current transducers (9,10) fitted to the batteries (4). The water level in the batteries is also monitored (11). The computer can also be used to drive a display showing the operating status of the drive elements. The user can also manually switch (20) to reduced power mode.
