LIQUID CRYSTAL PANEL AND LIQUID CRYSTAL PROJECTION TYPE TELEVISION USING THE SAME

PURPOSE:To make the brightness of a display image high without requiring any polarizing plate. CONSTITUTION:Counter electrodes are formed in an interdigital shape. Liquid crystal which has a negative dielectric constant is used as liquid crystal 17 and is oriented homogeneously. When an AC voltage is applied between the counter electrodes 16a and 16b, the liquid crystal between the counter electrodes is oriented vertically to have an ordinary light refractive index no. At other parts, a refractive index which is intermediate between an extraordinary light refractive index no and the ordinary light refractive index no is obtained. Therefore, a pattern of the periodic repetition of the different refractive indexes is generated. This repetitive pattern provides the function of a diffraction grating. Light which is made incident on the panel is diffracted. When a voltage is applied to a reflection electrode 14 on the other hand, the diffraction grating is disordered with the voltage. Therefore, light can be modulated by varying the extent of diffraction according to whether the signal voltage to the reflection electrode is high or low.
