Surface terrain data structure for use by earth moving machine

The machine operates with the data from a positioning system 102, e.g. a laser sensing or global positioning system. The positioning system provides input to a microprocessor based controller 116. The controller has a stored required ground surface model 106 used for comparison 104. Input is also made from a dynamic surface model. Output is applied to an automatic controller and a user display.
