The method involves using a transporting carriage (1) which moves between a feeding table, press and stacking unit and has carrying and clamping members for gripping panels along both lengths during feeding. The transporting carriage has suction heads for raising and removing finished panels. In order to prevent panel sagging during feeding the carrier members and clamps extend transversely into the press chamber so that one-third to two thirds of half of the panel width is supported continuously along each length. The clamping members act on the top of the panels and move together with the carriers. Process plant has panel carrier arms which move transversely into the press chamber to various points depending on panel width. At the ends of the arms carrier strips run parallel to the press middle axis and along the full length of the press. Clamping members press against the upper panel side opposite the long carrier strips. Flat struts attached to the carrier strips extend away from the press chamber and are connected to the clamping members which comprise stirrups with clamping rolls at their ends. The stirrups are moved up and down relative to the upper panel face by a positioning drive unit.
