PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sustain or recover print quality of printer easily by an arrangement wherein a user makes a decision whether cleaning is required or not for a printing mechanism, e.g. a print head, based on a printed character or pattern and cleaning the printing mechanism, as required. SOLUTION: A user makes a decision whether a printed test pattern satisfies a required print quality or not and determines to start cleaning or to terminate main processing. Upon receiving a cleaning command, a CPU 103 reads out cleaning conditions for determining a cleaning method from an ROM 105 or an RAM 106 based on current print requirements stored in the ROM 105 or set by a dip switch and drives a cleaning mechanism 110 according to the conditions to perform cleaning of a print mechanism. Upon finishing the cleaning operation, test print and cleaning are repeated. |
