PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hearth roller excellent in oxidation resistance and wear resistance and capable of stably and continuously feeding high quality metal strips for a long period. SOLUTION: In this hearth roller for a heat treatment furnace where a heated steel sheet is allowed to travel in an oxidizing atmosphere, the roller barrel is constituted by forming a silicon carbide-carbon composite layer on a base material composed of carbon and further forming a boron carbide-silicon carbide-carbon composite layer of 3 to 50 μm thick on the silicon carbide-carbon composite layer. Further, the silicon carbide-carbon composite layer is dispersed nearly uniformly and made nearly homogeneous in the depth direction and has 1 to 5 mm thickness. Moreover, this silicon carbide-carbon composite layer can be formed on the surface of the base material composed of carbon by applying a slurry consisting of silicon powder, boron carbide powder, and thermoplastic resin to the surface of the base material composed of carbon and then carrying out heat treatment. |
