PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for manufacturing a friction plate in a high mass productivity or the like. SOLUTION: This friction plate manufacturing apparatus 1 comprises a material feeding mechanism 23 for feeding a sheet-like friction material 21 by a predetermined quantity, a punching press mechanism 25 for punching a friction material segment 9 of predetermined shape from the sheet-like friction material 21, a friction plate holding mechanism 29 for holding the friction material segment 9 on an index table 27, a change-over valve mechanism 31 for feeding negative pressure or compressed air to the index table 27, a friction plate discharging mechanism 33 for discharging a completed friction plate 5 from the index table 27, a conveying mechanism 35 for conveying the discharged friction plate 5 to the next step, a cutting mechanism 37 for cutting the sheet- like friction material 21 with the friction material segment 9 punched therefrom as a scrap, and an electric motor 39 served for driving each mechanism.
