PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for integrally fixing each scanning carriage with a main body frame so that each scanning carriage freely movably arranged in an image reading apparatus main body may not be damaged due to vibration at transport. SOLUTION: The image scanner 1 is provided with the scanning carriages 8 and 9 movably arranged in the apparatus body 2 and a carriage lock 14 for immovably fixing the scanning carriages 8 and 9 to the apparatus body 2, and the carriage lock 14 is arranged so as to be freely movable between a fixing position for fixing the scanning carriages 8 and 9 and a retreat position for allowing the movement of the scanning carriages 8 and 9 in the apparatus body 2, and also, an operating part 27 for controlling the movement from outside the apparatus is arranged.
