PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound on an industrial scale at a low cost, at high hydrogenation activity against acetophenone, with a little formation of ethylbenzene as a by-product and at high productivity per catalyst by hydrogenating acetophenone in the presence of a specific catalyst. SOLUTION: (B) Acetophenone is hydrogenated in the presence of (A) a copper-zinc oxide catalyst compounded together with a carbonate of an alkaline earth metal (e.g. barium carbonate or strontium carbonate) (A1 ) and a salt of an alkali metal (e.g. sodium carbonate or sodium nitrate) (A2 ) e.g. at 0-200 deg.C, especially 100-200 deg.C under 5-100atm. Further, the component A is prepared as follows: a solution is prepared by dissolving e.g. a copper salt, a zinc salt and a salt of an alkaline earth metal; an alkali solution such as an alkali metal carbonate or an ammonium carbonate is added to the obtained solution to coprecipitate salts; after filtered and washed, the precipitate is mixed to a solution of an alkali metal salt; and, after the solvent is evaporated from the mixture, the residue is dried, baked and subjected to hydrogen reduction. |
