The method involves operating boiling plates (Z), where the boiling plates are arranged independently on a cooking surface (22). The boiling plates are represented on a display unit. Two of the boiling plates are selected. An operating time is acquired. The operating time is assigned to the selected boiling plates. The operating time of the selected boiling plate is projected on a controlling unit of a timer of an induction cooktop (20), where the controlling unit controls operation of a set of induction units of the cooktop. An independent claim is also included for an induction cooktop comprising a heating unit.
