APPARATUS FOR WINDING TAPE

An apparatus for winding a package of tape includes a rotatable core for supporting the package for rotation around its axis and a tape layon a drive roll assembly for engaging and driving the package to wrap the tape around the package. The package is supported so that it can move away from the drive roller as it increases in diameter. The drive roller includes a central lay-on roller portion and two drive portions each arranged on a respective side of the lay-on roller portion. The lay-on roller portion is free to rotate relative to the drive roller portion about the axis thereof so asto accommodate differences in tape tension as the tape is wound onto the package.
