[Also in Division G1] Cancerous animal cells are identified by scanning the cell with a beam of electromagnetic energy of a wavelength within the absorption band of nucleic acid in the cell, detecting the energy reflected or transmitted and indicating when the variations of energy intensity differ from a predetermined pattern of variation. Light from a source 7 is focussed on the cell under test on a slide 1 and the transmitted light is split by a prism 15 so that light of a wavelength absorbed by nucleic acids (2652 Š) falls on a photomultiplier 25 and a wavelength absorbed by cell proteins or a stain falls on a photomultiplier 31. The slide is moved in a rectangular raster pattern and the respective outputs S 1 , S 2 from 25, 31 are differentiated, and if the difference between the derivatives R1, R2 is greater than a preset valve a signal from circuit 39 indicates that the cell is cancerous. The prism may be replaced by filters or dichroic mirrors and the slide may be fixed, and scanned by a flying spot scanner. In a modification only wavelength 2652 Š is used, the presence of high frequency components in the output from the photomultiplier, detected by a high pass filter indicates that the cell is normal. Their absence indicates a cancerous cell.
