Tunnel furnace for alternative employment with oxidising or reducing atmospheres with provision for changing in the direction of flow of the atmosphere in the furnace, it being possible to have pulsating alternate reducing and oxidising conditions in the furnace, this being achieved by means of a reversable blower, furnace gates at either end of the furnace, a heat exchanger and volume equaliser at the exit end, all of which can be operated according to preset programme.
