Enriching iron sow with copper - by treating melt with oxygen

Iron sow contg. 75-80% Fe and Cu is melted in an electric arc furnace and oxygren is blown through the melt at a pressure of 19-21 atmos. using a lance to a depth of 3/8'-1/2'. FeO which forms a slag is removed. Pref. the bath temp. is kept low for Fe3O4 to form, and other slag-forming agents may be added. Teh Cu content of teh melt is increased progressively by adding 20-25% Cu-contg. Fe, referred to the weight of the charge, the Fe removed being therefore replaced.
