Cyclodecanonol formic acid ester - from decalin hydroperoxide soln and formic acid

Prepn. of cyclodecanonol formic acid ester in soln. or in pure form by (a) prepn. of a 1-20%, esp. 2-13% hydroperoxide soln. by passing air or O2 under elevated or normal press. into pure cis-decalin or a mixt. of cis- and trans-decalin, and (b) addn. of 30-100%, esp. 80-100% H.COOH to this soln. with vigorous mixing of the 2 phases. Another lower carboxylic acid e.g. acetic or propionic or an inorganic acid may be added as well as the H.COOH. Mixing may take place in vacuo, and H2O and/or acid may be removed from the mixt. by distn. The hydroperoxide and acid phases are mixed at 0 degree C to b.pt. pref. 30-75 degrees C. The soln. of ester in acid may be used directly for pyrolysis to cyclodecenone or the ester may be recovered from soln. in pure form by distn.
