Electro-deposited ternary alloy contng. in wt. % 40-90% Sn, 10-50% Co and 1-28% of >=1 of Sb or a Gp. IIb, IIIa, and VIb metal, pref. Zn, Cd, In, and Cr, more pref. Zn, In, and Cr. Typically the electrolyte is acidic and depsn. takes place at 50-85 degrees C. at a current density of 5-45 amps./ft.2 Pref. the bath contains hydrochloric and fluoboric acids, more pref. together with the appropriate metals added as the equivalent salts. The electrolyte may also contain auxiliary agents and a surfactant. The deposit is tarnish resistant and has a Cr-like brightness. It also has better colour stability and hardness superior to the individual constituents of the deposit. Resistant to chloride and sea water attack. The alloy can be used to plate steel, brass, Zn, ceramic and plastics workpieces.
|
