An electric machine (9) has a field winding (F) supplied from a power converter (SR). In order to indicate any short circuit in the field circuit, sensing bodies (ST1-3, LR1, R1, BF, LR2, R2, C) are designed to detect the amplitude of an AC component in the power converter's direct current (IF) during both undisturbed operation and a short circuit.
