Novel water-soluble vinyl addition monomers are described generally by the formula: <IMAGE> wherein: M is hydrogen, lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, or calcium; R is allyl or methallyl; R1 is hydrogen, allyl or methallyl; R2 is hydrogen or sulfonato: R3 is hydrogen or sulfonato; and providing that R2 is not the same as R3.
