In order to control the running of a stepping motor (1) whose drive energy is provided by the emission of current pulses which have a constant pulse width, the amplitude of the current pulses is increased when non-running of the stepping motor (1) has been confirmed when a current pulse is supplied to it. Current pulses which provide such an increased drive energy are supplied to the stepping motor (1) at least during a defined number of current pulses before a reduction in the current amplitude takes place. <IMAGE>
