A rumen injector for injecting a predetermined volume of a medicament into the body of an animal, this injector comprising a hollow body with a handle gripped by a user, a cylinder fastened in the hollow body, a piston movably connected to the cylinder for delimiting a space of variable volume and a needle communicating with the space, the piston being movable into a tensioned position in which it is retained at a predetermined distance until it is automatically released on insertion of a needle in the body of an animal.
